Handelsblatt reports on Refined’s intraoperative diagnostics project

Refined was recently featured in Handelsblatt’s “Inside Digital Health” series, highlighting the company’s work on bringing tissue diagnostics directly into the operating room.

The article focuses on the KURE research project at University Hospital Dresden, where Refined collaborates with spatial biology AI specialist Katana Labs, Technische Universität Dresden, and Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg. The project aims to develop new approaches for real time intraoperative cancer diagnostics.

Cancer diagnosis today often takes hours or even days. Tissue samples must be transported to pathology laboratories, prepared, stained, and interpreted before treatment decisions can be confirmed.

Within the KURE project, Refined contributes stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy, which generates molecular images of fresh tissue without staining or preparation directly at the point of care. Katana Labs provides cloud based artificial intelligence that analyses this molecular imaging data in real time, enabling surgeons and pathologists to access diagnostic information while the patient is still in the operating room.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) through the KIOn programme.

The first clinical applications focus on urological cancers, but the underlying technology platform, combining label free molecular imaging with AI assisted analysis, could be applied to a wide range of surgical oncology procedures.
